What is the difference between a web site and a web page?

A web site is an electronic address (sometimes referred to as a URL) that stores web pages. A web page is quite simply a physical document that can be viewed in any web browser. It can contain pictures, graphics, and even videos. The more complex the page, the longer it takes for a browser to actually download it. The "heading" page of your web site should contain some basic information about you, and provide the gateway through which your visitors can "enter" your site. It should be fairly simple so that customers can properly "qualify" your site(determine whether-or-not they actually want to visit you). Save all the fancy JAVA and Shockwave coding for your other pages. HTML coded web pages can be of any length, but for our purposes, the information you want to share should be on a page that's roughly the size of a legal document (8.5" x 14").

How can I my company get a web site?

You need three things:

1. An Internet Service Provider (ISP) that will enable you to get access to the world wide web,

2. A special type of server to act as a "host" for your web site. If you've got BIG BUCKS, you can set up your own, but most small to medium businesses use a third party host provider. Some ISP's even offer this service.

3. Some HTML coded pages and the ability to transfer them to the hosting server.

What happens if I don't renew my domain name?

That really depends on your registrar. Most allow a grace period and make every effort to contact you with respect to renewing your domain. This is the reason why it's so important for you to ensure your contact information remains current and accurate. After the grace period (usually 90 days) expires, the name is de-listed and the DNS address removed. This means that your customers will no longer have access to your web site. What's more, your domain name is released and becomes available to the first party that pays the fee. If your domain has been active for a number of years, most of the major search engines already list it. This puts the buyer of your domain one step ahead of another individual that's just listed a new domain. If your company has opted out of maintaining a web presence but is still in business, we suggest you consider renewing it anyway (the cost is minimal). You can post a "for sale" page, or list the domain as "for sale" with an agent.

How much does it cost to host a web site?

Third party web hosting services have costs that depend on a number of different options that you choose when you first set up your account. Most start at around $35.00/month. Sometimes restrictions are placed on the number of pages (information) that you can store on the hosting server, and they charge extra for more space. The other variable would be the number of "hits" your site receives on a monthly basis. Many of the better hosting companies provide shopping cart and secure server transactions that would enable you to process credit card and personal banking information. This type of service also comes with an extra premium. You should also have access to an email server that would allow customers to contact you at your own unique email address (it usually employs an extension that mirrors your own domain name). Can I design my own site and web pages?

Sure... There are a number of programs on the market that let you do this. Microsoft® FrontPage® springs to mind. This is an HTML editor that let's even novices layout and design fairly professional looking web pages and banners. If you have access to a scanner, you can even put pictures on your site.

OK, I've agreed to your terms, and contracted shopforbrains.com to design my site. How long does it take to get up and running?

We wish we could say "minutes", but it really depends on the size and complexity of what you envision as your unique site. If you provide us with the basic documents you want published to your site, then the time to get you up and running will be drastically reduced. When we have to brain-storm your site, then it could take a little longer (and cost more). We actually have to get to know you and your company a little better in this instance. It wouldn't do to publish a humourous looking site if your company was a funeral home (although the thought of that would provide an interesting challenge). shopforbrains.com will have most sites ready for your review in about three to five business days. We won't actually publish anything to the web until you've approved of the design and layout though.

Once it's actually ready to be transferred to the hosting server, it only takes a few minutes and your company will be a presence on the world wide web.

How does my web site get advertised?

There's a lot that we can do, and a lot that you can do. We start you off by registering your site with the top ten search engines and inserting things called "meta-tags" in the header lines of your pages. These are code words that are picked up by special programs called "spiders" which search engines use to "hunt" out new web sites. If your site starts winning design awards (which incidentally is one of our goals for our customers) then you not only increase the value of your site, but the number of "hits" from visitors (not to mention give us the bragging rights if we did the brain-storming).

You can also approach complimentary businesses (if you're a restaurant, look for kitchen equipment suppliers, for instance) about a link exchange (they put a link to your business on their site and you put a link to their business on yours).

What's a search engine?

In Microsoft's Internet Explorer, when you click on the search button, you're actually invoking one of the most powerful search engines on the planet (depending on if you believe there's life elsewhere in the Universe, it could also be the biggest in the Galaxy too). There are other's as well. Who hasn't heard of , Google or YAHOO!? 'Nuff said?

Our company already has a web site. What can shopforbrains.com do for us?

Let's start by saying that NO ONE can absolutely guarantee performance, particularily when it comes to increasing the number of "hits" to your site. There are some tricks of the trade that you probably don't know about though, and we do. For one thing, we "schmooze" with only the best search engines. We start by doing some "house cleaning" on your site to make it more attractive to the major search engines. Keep in mind, everything we do is backed by shopforbrains.com no hassle customer service policy. If you don't notice improvement within three months, we'll refund any maintenance fees (MMF's) that you've paid to us. We don't like seeing money going "the other way", so you can expect our best effort on anything we take on.

For companies that wish to expand their internet presence into the global market, we offer specialized proofing services that ensure your corporate message is expressed with eloquence and simplicity. Click on the link to the left to find out more.
